Library Databases

Have you assigned a research project lately? Point your Middle School students in the right direction when using our library databases.  The following recommendations may help.

General:

  • AP Photo Archive: photos, text, audio and graphics from the 1800s
  • Encyclopedia Britannica: includes the complete encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year
  • Grolier’s Encyclopedias:  three online encyclopedias
  • World Book Online: online encyclopedia
  • Historic Newspapers:  full text of the New York Times from 1851 and the Washington Post
  • Opposing Viewpoints: online library of current events topics, the facts, pros, and cons

Ancient Civilization/World Civilization:

  • Culturegrams: in depth coverage of over 200 countries
  • World Geography:  cultural, historical, and spatial information on world countries
  • World History, Ancient & Medieval The database ranges beyond Western civilization to ancient Africa, the Islamic world, and the East,
  • Student Resource Center Gold: newspapers, journals, biographies, timelines
  • Discovering Collectioncriticism on Shakespeare, novels, short stories, info on science & history
  • ELibrary: magazines, newspapers, radio/TV transcripts, pictures, and maps, Knowledge Notes, history & literature databases, knowledge notes, Poets on Screen

Languages Arts/Literature:

  • Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry:  search for poems by author, title, or subject
  • Discovering Collectioncriticism on Shakespeare, novels, short stories, info on science & history
  • Historic Newspapers:  full text of the New York Times from 1851 and the Washington Post
  • Literary Reference Center: plot summaries, literary criticism, reviews, author interviews, overviews
  • Novelist: find a book to read or find a book similar to one that you liked
  • Opposing Viewpoints: online library of current events topics, the facts, pros, and cons

  1. I LoVe this web site! The teacher who developed it is very creative!! It is gratifying to see that teaching is keeping up with the technological times. So often classroom work is behind the times, but this teacher is keeping up with them!
